Stuart McSherry Stonewall, MB. (204) 467-1858 or (204) 886-7027 www.mcsherryauction.com Dispersal sale for George Sutton Hochbaum. George was a former resident of Delta Marsh, currently residing in Winnipeg, Manitoba. George grew up as a trapper, fisherman, horse and cattlemen. He grew up in a family where environment and art were paramount in the survival of the human race. George’s father married Eleanor Joan Ward, second oldest of seven in the family of Edward and Kate Ward. Edward and Kate managed the James F. Bell of General Mills, Minneapolis U.S.A land estate on the Delta Marsh. King George the Fifth in 1905 formerly hunted here. The oldest son Pete Ward was an artist whose picture is featured in the auction along with Torry, Russell, and nephews Bryan and Terry’s carvings and paintings of Decoys. The Ward and Ducharme families are renowned in Canada for their fine hunting and artistic decoys.> George’s early beginning took him into the marsh with well-known hunters, guides and local people to hunt ducks and geese. He also trapped at Delta for muskrat, mink, weasel, fox and coyote. One of George’s mentors was his father H. Albert Hochbaum who came to Canada in the 1930’s leaving behind a well known American family. His fostering of good will towards the environment with Mister James F. Bell and various universities under the guidance of Aldo Leopold. At the university of Wisconsin he left a legacy of research, art, and a better understanding of ducks, geese and wildlife through Delta Waterfowl Research Station, which is now a well known environmental agency worldwide. > George’s appreciation of hunters, trappers, guides and local people were embedded in his mind, early, as times were tough after WW2. His familiarity with the Ducharme family who were famous carvers and families such as the Lavallee’s, Chartrand’s, Lepine’s and the Cook’s who also carved duck decoys and who primarily guided hunters for Mr. Bell. Other local families such as Hutchinsons, Caswell, and Garnham’s influenced George’s early ways. He attended a one-room schoolhouse that brought students in from seven miles away. These students came by bicycle, horse drawn sleigh and boat. The schoolhouse had a peak of 14 students’ grade 1 to 8. > The Delta Marsh became a mecca for artists, scientist, students, and hunters and for people who had the appreciation of the marsh as a “live-setting museum”. Koppen, Tomlin and Pows influenced George’s early ways of life. People would travel from Portage la Prairie, Winnipeg, and Brandon. In the early days people who were coming from St. Paul Minneapolis, Chicago or Toronto would have to travel by train to reach the Delta Marsh.> As Delta Waterfowl Research Station grew people would travel from Poland, Japan, and England to study and hunt at Delta. George’s life on the home front span seventeen and a half years experience with visitors such as Sir Peter Scott, William Rowan, Gotleib, McKinney, Cootch and Normand De Grandemasion. Stars such as Jimmy Robinson, Robert Taylor, Clarke Gable, Annie Okley, Bud Grant and other members of the Blue bombers would visit Delta Marsh. > George left home at the age of seventeen to head to Montana to become a cowboy and university student. Once in Montana, it was not what George had expected. He then left and headed to his father’s home state of Colorado. He had a desire to learn and have good work ethic. With prodding help from his father he sought greater understanding of interactions of people, the environment including plants & animals and how they over come change in time & space through his university studies.> After Colorado he sought to heighten his knowledge of events in the world he deemed as systems, leading to post grad degrees at Yale and at The University of British Columbia. Here he worked on mathematical models of scenarios for long range forecasting for environmental events. After University George embarked on a teaching job at the University of British Columbia and The University of Saskatchewan. This led him to teach at the University of Manitoba as an Adjunct Associate Professor till 1995 when he retired. For a twenty-five year span George worked as a scientist for the Government involved in Migratory bird problem solving related to humans and human impact on wild life with the province of Manitoba and the Federal Government. > Featured in The Auction are a collection of his lived pastimes, and vocational exercises, family collectibles and furniture dating back to the 1850’s. Included are old Shell boxes, art decoys, pictures, fine art, furniture and hunting paraphernalia.> Don’t miss the opportunity to expand your collection as you> are buying Manitoba Canadian Heritage!
