Introduction

This auction represents one man’s lifetime accumulation of cards, covers, picture post-cards, related material and ephemera.  You name it, and it’s probably in this collection somewhere.  Even if an item came in a FedEx, Priority Post, or U. P. S. envelope, Dr. Kremer would punch it three holes and put it in a binder, so there is considerable bulk.  In the listed material there are no less than 318 binders!  A conservative estimate of the material in the binders would be over 3000 items.   There is very little individual stamp material in the collection; Dr. Kremer was first and foremost a collector of “on-cover” material.  It would appear as if nothing was ever discarded.  If something came into the Kremer household in an envelope – regardless of size – or a picture postcard from someone on vacation, it invariably ended up in one of his binders.  With Dr. Kremer being originally from Hungary, the collection is especially strong in the postal history of the country from the latter part of the 18th century into the early years of the 21st.  The collection also has significant quantities of British and American cards and covers – postal stationery, registers, special delivery, first day and first flight covers.  Dr. Kremer’s philatelic library and related reference collection is also being offered for sale and comprises the first 25 lots.  Binders and large lots comprise the next 126 lots (26 – 151); miscellaneous countries, cards and covers are next (152 – 168); Great Britain cards and covers (lots 200 – 268), commence with a seldom seen and quite rare cover with a pair of the 6d embossed from Scotland to the United States in 1854 (lot 200) – G. B. continues to lot 268 with some interesting registered covers, including one from the 2nd Guards Brigade in France during the First World War to London in 1917 (lot 243); Hungary postal history, along with a number of various European countries comprise the final part of the sale (lots 300 – 468).  To compliment the two binders of First War Military and Naval Mail (lots 134 and 135) there are a number of individual lots from Hungarian naval ships, both surface and submarine; P. O. W. mail, Offices in the Turkish Empire etc.  This is an auction that has something for everyone who is interested in postmarks and postal history.
